Use of Various Instructional methods and Pedagogical initiatives

To improve the level of understanding in students, the following innovative teaching approaches are undertaken by the institution.

ICT Supported Learning

Every faculty member can effectively use black board, LCD projector judiciously during the lecture delivery. The faculty member can access the database of digital library from the classroom which consists of course material, Recorded video lectures and animations. Faculty and Students can access the journal resources also from the classroom. The student can access the server of the digital library from home also with the help of URL link provided in the college website. A database of quiz questions for all subjects is created for conducting online quiz tests to the students. The list of NPTEL recorded video lectures available is kept in the website for offline access also.

The Institute has acquired number of computers, printers, LCD projectors, application software’s and system software’s. These are effectively used for teaching. The students are also encouraged to develop software’s for the solution of the assignments and tutorials. Many final year projects are completed through the use of software.

The faculty can use chalk and board and audio visual aids in teaching. Students are also encouraged to actually interact during the lecture hour by getting the doubts clarified on the spot. Faculty using models, charts for interactive teaching. Faculty are using SMART class room to interactive session. Projector is used for demonstration, video (NPTEL), audio of classes.

Efforts are made to maximize the use of Modern resources and aid to improve the teaching in the class rooms. Modern teaching aids like OHP, Multimedia, Projectors, and Internet enabled Computer systems are used for class room instruction as well as other student learning experiences. The students are also encouraged to use computer software packages for their projects. NPTEL lectures, MIT Lectures, EJournals.

Faculty utilizes online resource course material of different International and National Universities. Use of multimedia projectors in the class room. Industrial tours are arranged for the students for practical exposure. The departments conduct paper contest, poster presentation, and technical exhibition etc. under departmental association. The College arranges state level competitions in literary & cultural, sports & games and technical paper contests Tech fest organized each year. Teachers deliver content beyond the syllabus apart from their class room instruction.

NATIONAL PROGRAMME ON TECHNOLOGY ENHANCED LEARNING (NPTEL)
  • NPTEL Courses are SWAYAM Courses
  • SWAYAM is the National MOOCs portal being developed by MHRD, Govt. of India.
  • In order to ensure best quality content is produced and delivered, seven National Coordinators have been appointed under SWAYAM. NPTEL is the official SWAYAM national coordinator for engineering.
  • All NPTEL online certification courses are SWAYAM courses too, and they are available on the SWAYAM platform as well.
  • By participating in NPTEL online courses, you and your college are officially participating in SWAYAM.

Teaching learning Methods/approaches:
  • The Faculty are encouraged to attend Training programs organized by the institution to empower and enable the use of various teaching aids and advanced technologies to improve the teaching – learning
  • Teaching and learning methods /approaches
  • Selection, development and use of enrichment materials
  • Assessment and validation

Teaching learning material:
  • All the faculty members according to their allotted subject will prepare the lesson plan and the course files.
  • The faculty members and the HODs provide the soft copy of teaching learning materials, and Question bank.
  • The faculty who are allotted as lab in charge will prepare the laboratory manual as the instructions given by the head of the department.
  • The teaching materials monitored through feedback from the students every Semester/ Year. The Principal and HOD go on rounds monitor the teaching methodology of the faculty in the class.

Soft skill Approach

"Aricent Academy" conducted specialized training to the faculty of Engineering at BIET during June 2016 by developing state-of-the-art facilities. They conducted one week workshop on "PRESENTATION SKILLS" which was attended by our faculty. The faculty has been using the workshop techniques in the class room to improve qualification of students.

BIET Management organizes Faculty Development Program on “PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT AND SOFT SKILS” every academic year beginning for all teaching faculty at Rama Krishna Math, Hyderabad in association with Vivekananda Institute of Human Excellence. The faculty has been using the workshop techniques in the class room to improve qualification of students.

Implementation
  • Select topic
  • Students are divided into three groups.
  • Each group is assigned a name based on topic selected.
  • Students are asked to give their views on the concept.
  • They are asked to prepare and give seminars on the given topics.
Outcome

Active participation of students. Remembering the topic for a longer time.

Socio Constructivist Perspective

Social constructivist perspectives focus on the interdependence of students in the co-construction of knowledge.

Idea

To play a video related to a topic and make students answer a few questions related toit.

Implementation

Playing a video on a particular topic of handling subject

Questionnaire: (About the topic given)

Outcome

Better understanding of a topic by students.

Classroom discussions

The idea is to make the students to discuss about the given topic and the outcome is to actively participation of students and remembering about the topic for a longer time. The faculty use chalk and board and audio visual aids in teaching. Students are also encouraged to actually interact during the lecture hour by getting the doubts clarified on the spot. Lectures are used to convey critical information, history, background, theories, and equations. Usually the lecturer will stand at the front of the room and recite information relevant to the lecture's content.

Short presentations

The idea is to make the students to give the presentation on a given topic and the outcome is to improve presentation skills of student and better analyzing of a topic.

Idea

To make students give a presentation on a given topic

Implementation
  • Selected 5 to 6 topics are given to some students.
  • They are asked to prepare and give seminars on the given topics.
Outcome

Improved presentation skills of student and better analyzing of a topic.

Group Projects

During the period of study in the III year II semester and IV year II semester, many real time projects are given to the students and they are guided by both faculty and Industry/Research personnel. During the period of study in the 6th to 8th semester, many real time projects are given to the students and they are guided by both faculty and Industry/Research personnel. The idea is to make students understand IEEE papers and implement a part of it and outcome is to bring out eh innovative ideas from the students.

Idea

To make students understand IEEE papers and implement a part of it.

Implementation

Students have implemented a few IEEE projects.

Outcome

Bringing out the creative thoughts of students.

Mind Gap

Idea

Mind Maps can be used in class to brainstorm and generate discussions. This involves use of notes with keywords and images in classroom teaching.

Implementation

Following image is shown to students and they are asked to discuss it among themselves. Topic name (represent diagram example related to that topic).

Outcome

This will encourage students not only to participate but also to fully understand a topic and its nuances by creating connections between ideas. This makes students remember the topic for a longer time.

Z to A Approach

Idea

Attempts to explain the application for a particular concept first and then the concept

Implementation

For Example explain the applications of Fins in real time and explain their functional behavior.

Outcome

Creating interest among the students in knowing the topics

Role play (Demonstration)

Idea

Students are given a scenario and other options to solve a particular issue, then the students are exposed to decision making in a given environment.

Implementation

Some students are selected randomly. Each student will be asked to play a role for each Mechanical component of the assembly. Each one has to discuss about working of their given component.

Outcome

Students will be able to understand the real working nature of the concepts and mechanical components

Brown Bag approach

Idea

A Bag is filled with papers having different topics of the subject written on them .each student is asked to pick a paper of student choice and they are given an opportunity to explain it.

Implementation

Topics are written in paper and kept in bag.

Outcome

This allows students to experience a real time exchange of knowledge.
